Pune, 11th February 2025: The issue of open garbage dumping continues to plague Pune, despite efforts by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to address it. In January, PMC took action against 5,500 individuals for littering and dumping waste in public spaces, but citizens argue that the problem persists.

Last month, an average of 180 cases per day were registered, with offenders being penalized for disposing of waste in open areas. Wards such as Hadapsar, Dhankawadi-Sahakarnagar, and Kondhwa-Yewalewadi were the most affected.

PMC officials have intensified surveillance at chronic dumping sites and are deploying teams to monitor and clear waste regularly. They urge citizens to cooperate by using collection vans instead of dumping waste in the open.

To address the issue, squads from all ward offices have been instructed to conduct frequent inspections at chronic spots. Officials believe that continuous waste collection will deter people from dumping again.

In addition to cracking down on garbage dumping, PMC has also imposed fines on individuals for spitting, urinating in public places, and setting waste on fire.

While PMC encourages proper waste disposal methods, residents feel that the corporation’s waste management system is incomplete. Dry waste collection, in particular, is a concern for many residents.

Health inspectors from PMC acknowledge the issue and emphasize the importance of citizen participation in maintaining cleanliness. They note that waste dumping resumes as soon as a site is cleared.

With stricter monitoring, penal actions, and increased awareness, PMC aims to tackle the garbage menace effectively. However, a sustainable long-term solution will require both citizen participation and improved waste management policies.
