The mysterious deaths of pigs in Kothrud have left residents on edge, as five more pigs were found dead on Tuesday, bringing the total to 47 in the past ten days. The Pune Municipal Corporation is still waiting for lab results from blood samples taken four days ago.
The deceased pigs have been discovered in the drainage system near Bharati Nagar, causing concerns about health and the environment. Kothrud has a small pork farming community, but no formal complaints have been filed by the pig owners despite the increasing death toll.
The lack of coordination between the Kothrud-Bavdhan Ward Office and the PMC Health Department has made the situation worse. A committee has been formed to improve communication and investigate the issue, with drain water samples also sent for testing.
During a recent meeting with concerned residents, PMC officials shared contact information for better communication. Surprisingly, the pig owners did not attend the meeting, and autopsies on the dead pigs could not be completed after 5 pm, according to Veterinary Officer Dr. Sarika Funde.
