As cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) continue to rise in Pune, government hospitals are facing a shortage of ICU beds. Over 50 patients are currently in intensive care, with 20 on ventilator support, causing concern among healthcare officials.
Many families are turning to government facilities for free GBS treatment under the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) due to the high costs of private hospital treatment. This has led to a surge in GBS admissions at hospitals like Sassoon General Hospital and Navale Hospital.
Navale Hospital is struggling to accommodate the increasing number of GBS patients, with six currently under treatment in the ICU. Similarly, Sassoon General Hospital is facing a high demand for ICU beds, with seven GBS patients in critical care.
Officials are worried about the strain on medical resources, especially as GBS cases require longer ICU stays compared to other critical illnesses. The financial assistance provided by MJPJAY is not always sufficient to cover the high treatment costs, forcing families to bear additional expenses.
With the GBS outbreak showing no signs of slowing down, government hospitals are calling for reinforcements to handle the growing pressure on ICU facilities.
