The victim fell prey to a scam and ended up losing a whopping ₹4 lakh after falling for a malicious APK file sent by an unknown sender. The Sahakarnagar Police Station has registered a case under the Information Technology Act in response to this incident.
According to reports from the police, the senior citizen received a call from an unknown number, claiming to be a customer service representative from a private company. The fraudster convinced the victim that there were issues with his bank account and instructed him to download a special file to resolve the supposed problem. Little did the victim know that this was all part of an elaborate scam.
Once the victim opened the file, cybercriminals were able to gain access to the mobile number linked to his bank account. In a matter of minutes, ₹4 lakh was siphoned off from his account, leaving him devastated. Upon realizing what had happened, the victim wasted no time in approaching the police to report the crime.
Police Inspector Amol More from the Crime Branch is currently leading the investigation into this case. In light of this incident, the police have issued a series of precautions for the public to follow in order to prevent falling victim to similar scams. These include avoiding responding to calls or messages from unknown numbers, refraining from downloading APK files from unverified sources, using official contact numbers when dealing with banks or customer service centers, reporting any suspicious transactions immediately, and enhancing security measures for mobile and internet banking.
