Hey there, Camp dwellers! Big news coming your way from the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) – they’ve just launched a massive crackdown on illegal hawkers in the area. Picture this: around seventy handcarts, ten gas cylinders, forty iron stands with wheels, and a whole tempo load of readymade garments and hawking articles were seized in a swoop on Friday evening.

The PCB didn’t mess around – they deployed approximately 100 policemen at five key locations to tackle the issue head-on. MG Road, East Street, Moledina Road, Tabut Street, and Sachapir Street were all targeted to remove hawkers who’ve been causing a ruckus for the past decade.

CEO Subrat Pal ain’t messing around either. He’s promised to keep the anti-encroachment and hawker removal drive going strong for the next month. Working hand in hand with the city police, they’ve even issued advance notices to warn unauthorized hawkers to clear out.

The Pune Camp Merchants Association (PCMA) has been pushing for this for a while now. They’ve been feeling the heat from these illegal hawkers, claiming it’s putting their businesses at risk. They pay their dues to the government, but still, the board couldn’t protect them from these encroachments.

This crackdown comes after a nasty incident in December 2023 where two PCB employees were manhandled by hawkers outside a local restaurant. The PCB isn’t taking any chances – they’ve lodged FIRs against these troublemakers and are cracking down hard.

Social activist Raj Singh is all for it, stating that a strict no-hawking policy is needed to keep the cantonment safe. He’s calling for criminal proceedings against any officials found cozying up to these hawkers.

So, Camp folks, keep an eye out – the streets are getting cleaner, and the hawkers are on notice. Let’s hope this crackdown sticks!
