The E-Mulakat Office, launched by the Maharashtra Jail Administration, has been a game-changer for prisoners and their families. This innovative initiative has tackled issues like travel expenses, administrative hurdles, and overcrowding problems associated with in-person visits. In the past year alone, over 3.16 lakh inmates have benefited from this facility in 60 prisons across the state.

Gone are the days when families had to endure long wait times and crowded visitor rooms to meet their loved ones behind bars. Thanks to the E-Prison Digital System introduced by the Maharashtra prison department, virtual interactions between inmates and their families have become a reality since July 4, 2023.

According to Additional Director General of Police (Prisons & Correctional Services), Prashant Burade, between January 1, 2024, and February 9, 2025, a whopping 3,16,747 inmates have utilized this facility to stay connected with their families.

The registration process for E-Mulakat is user-friendly and straightforward: prisoners and their families can schedule calls after completing the registration process, and information about the facility is readily available at every prison entrance. LED screens also display video tutorials to guide families and legal representatives through the registration process.

Currently operational in 60 prisons across Maharashtra, the E-Mulakat facility has been a lifeline for the state’s 1,105 foreign inmates, many of whom are serving sentences for drug trafficking. The introduction of E-Mulakat has not only allowed them to reconnect with their families but has also significantly improved their mental well-being.

The Yerwada Central Prison in Pune leads the pack with the highest number of virtual meetings, totaling 45,174 E-Mulakat sessions conducted so far.

The expansion of the E-Mulakat facility has brought immense relief to inmates and their families, enhancing administrative transparency and communication channels. Moving forward, the prison department is committed to further enhancing the system for greater efficiency and accessibility.
