- The Department of Irrigation in Pune has issued a warning to stop the city’s water supply starting on February 25 if outstanding dues are not cleared.
- Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has disputed the billing calculations, claiming that they are flawed and have appealed to the Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority (MWRRA) for resolution.
- The matter is currently pending a hearing, with PMC officials arguing that the threat of supply disruption is unfair to citizens.
- According to PMC Water Supply Chief Nandkishor Jagtap, the Irrigation Department has incorrectly applied industrial water rates to municipal usage, resulting in a disputed bill of ₹726 crore.
- PMC plans to pay the legitimate amount of ₹160 crore, as per standard rates, while awaiting a resolution from the MWRRA.
- PMC officials believe that penalties for sewage discharge, misclassified water usage, and overuse calculations have inflated the dues, and maintain that the Irrigation Department’s demand is unreasonable.
- Until a regulatory decision is made, PMC assures residents that the city’s water supply will not be impacted by the ongoing dispute with the Irrigation Department.
