The city of Pune is currently facing a grim situation as two more suspected deaths related to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) have been reported, bringing the total number of fatalities to 11. The Pune district health department has confirmed that four of these deaths were indeed caused by the rare neurological disorder.

In one tragic case, a 26-year-old teacher from Nanded City lost her battle with severe GBS, septic shock, and multiple organ failure after displaying symptoms such as diarrhea and difficulty swallowing liquids. Despite receiving treatment at Sahyadri Multispeciality Hospital, her condition continued to worsen, and she eventually passed away at Kashibai Navale Medical College and General Hospital.

Another suspected GBS death involved a 37-year-old man from Daund who suffered from acute flaccid quadriplegia, acute respiratory failure, and a lower respiratory tract infection. Despite receiving IVIG treatment at Sassoon General Hospital, his condition deteriorated, leading to his untimely death.

These tragic incidents add to the growing concern over GBS in Maharashtra, with a total of 211 suspected cases and 183 confirmed cases reported. While some patients have been discharged, others remain in intensive care units or on ventilators, highlighting the severity of this neurological disorder.
