Hey, Pune folks! Have you heard about the latest controversy surrounding the government’s mandate on High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP)? Well, if you own a vehicle manufactured before 2019, you might want to pay attention.
It seems like vehicle owners in Pune are not too happy about the new requirement to install HSRP on their cars and bikes. The additional cost of these plates has sparked protests and demonstrations across the city, with law students taking to the streets at Goodluck Chowk to voice their concerns.
One of the major issues raised during the protest is the lack of public awareness about the new mandate. Many citizens feel that the government has not done enough to inform the public about the requirement, leading to confusion and misinformation. This confusion has also given rise to a black market for counterfeit HSRP plates in Pune, with illegal vendors selling them at a premium.
The Central Government has made it mandatory for all vehicles in the country to have HSRP, with new vehicles already equipped with these plates. However, older vehicles have until 30th April 2025 to get them installed. The cost, including fitting charges, is to be borne by vehicle owners in Maharashtra, with prices ranging from ₹450 for two-wheelers to ₹745 for other vehicles.
Protesting students are questioning why the financial burden is being shifted onto citizens when they have already paid for number plates and RTO taxes. They are demanding that the government cover the cost instead. The demand is that the government should provide the plates free of charge.
Meanwhile, reports have emerged of a black market for HSRP plates in areas like Ghorpade Peth, Ambegaon, and Pune-Satara Road. Vendors are allegedly selling counterfeit plates without any document verification, bypassing official procedures. As the deadline looms closer, citizens and activists are calling for government intervention to address these concerns and put an end to illegal practices in the city.
So, Puneites, what are your thoughts on this issue? Do you think the government should step in and provide free HSRP plates? Let us know in the comments below!
