The Baby Canal in Hadapsar, Pune is facing a major issue with water hyacinth growth, leading to concerns about increased mosquito breeding and the spread of infectious diseases. The PMC’s Health Department has requested the Water Resources Department to remove the water hyacinth, but they have refused, blaming pollution caused by residents dumping garbage into the canal.
The canal passes through several areas in Hadapsar and is currently choked with water hyacinth and garbage, prompting frequent complaints from residents about the mosquito population. In response, the health department has started insecticide spraying, but the presence of water hyacinth has made it ineffective. Despite a letter sent to the Water Resources Department two months ago, no action has been taken.
The Water Resources Department claims they lack the manpower and equipment for canal cleaning and point to the high pollution levels caused by garbage dumping. They suggest that the PMC should implement measures to prevent dumping and take responsibility for the canal’s cleanliness and security. Dr. Rajesh Dighe of the PMC’s Health Department emphasized the risk of infectious diseases due to increased mosquito breeding in the canal. It remains to be seen how the issue will be resolved and whether the canal will be cleaned up to prevent further health risks for residents.
