Indian grapes are making waves in the international market as discussions between India and New Zealand heat up. A New Zealand delegation is currently in Maharashtra to evaluate the potential for resuming grape imports from India after they were previously halted due to biosecurity concerns.
A key meeting took place at the APEDA office in Mumbai where officials from both countries discussed the future of grape exports. Dr. Kailash Mote highlighted Maharashtra’s significant role in grape production, stating that the state accounts for a majority of India’s grape exports. In the last season alone, India exported over 3.24 lakh tonnes of grapes to various countries.
The New Zealand delegation, led by Karen Paugh, is optimistic about the progress being made. Despite the challenges of agricultural trade approvals, Paugh expressed confidence in the quality of Indian grapes and hinted at the possibility of allowing trial shipments after assessing orchards in Maharashtra.
