Lonavala, a picturesque hill station known for its natural beauty and serene landscapes, has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons. Two popular resorts in the area have come under fire for operating without the necessary approvals from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB).
According to reports, the resorts were found to be operating without consent to establish and consent to operate from the MPCB. In addition, they were also lacking essential infrastructure such as a sewage treatment plant, an organic waste converter, and proper air pollution control measures.
The MPCB, not one to take environmental violations lightly, has issued notices to both resorts, questioning why their operations should not be shut down and why their water and electricity supply should not be discontinued for non-compliance. Legal action is also on the table if the resorts fail to come up with a compliance plan during the upcoming hearing.
This is not the first time that the MPCB has cracked down on establishments in Lonavala. The hill station has been facing increasing environmental concerns, including air and water pollution from unregulated construction, growing vehicular traffic, and improper waste disposal. The discharge of untreated wastewater into local water bodies has only added to the pollution levels, with the hospitality sector being a major contributor to the problem.
In the past, the MPCB has taken action against several establishments in Lonavala, including issuing show cause notices to the Municipal Council for its ineffective waste management practices. It seems that the authorities are serious about protecting the environment and ensuring that businesses comply with the necessary regulations to preserve the beauty of Lonavala for future generations.
