Hey Pune folks! Big news coming your way – the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is putting a halt to financial assistance for Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) patients starting from 1st March.

In the last month, there have been multiple cases of GBS reported in the Sinhagad Road area, specifically in Nanded City, Kirkatwadi, Nandoshi, Dhayari, and DSK Vishwa. Investigations have shown that contaminated water was the main culprit behind the outbreak.

Initially, the PMC had stepped in to help by providing financial aid under the Urban Poor Scheme. They were offering ₹2 lakh per patient for those who qualified under the scheme and ₹1 lakh for others. But now that the outbreak is under control and new cases are popping up sporadically, the PMC has decided to stop the financial aid.

Since January 14th, the PMC had been providing assistance to patients in identified GBS hotspots. The treatment costs between ₹5 lakh and ₹10 lakh per patient, and the PMC had been footing the bill due to the water contamination issue.

A total of ₹49 lakh has been distributed so far, with 12 patients under the Urban Poor Scheme receiving ₹24 lakh and 25 other patients receiving ₹1 lakh each, totaling ₹25 lakh. The health department of the PMC has confirmed that the assistance program will no longer be available.

So, if you or someone you know is dealing with GBS, make sure to seek alternative financial assistance as the PMC’s program is coming to an end. Stay safe and stay informed, Pune!
