The recent horrific rape incident at Swargate ST Bus Stand in Pune has sparked outrage among the public, highlighting the severe lapses in passenger safety by both the State Transport administration and the police. The administration is facing criticism for failing to ensure passenger safety, while the police are being slammed for ignoring repeated warnings about criminal activities at the bus depot.

An investigation into the case has revealed that the Swargate ST administration had filed over 40 complaints to the police in the past year, alerting them about illegal agents infiltrating the premises and harassing passengers. Despite these complaints, the police have not taken any concrete action, allowing illegal passenger traffic to flourish at Pune’s major bus depots.

Swargate, Wakdewadi (Shivajinagar), and Pune Station bus depots handle a large number of passengers daily, but they have become hotspots for illegal activities. Unregistered vehicles and unauthorized travel agents operate openly in these depots, intimidating ST employees and making passengers vulnerable to theft and robbery.

The police’s inaction has emboldened criminals, leading to an increase in criminal activities at the bus depots. Despite recommendations from the Swargate Police to improve security measures, the implementation of these measures has been slow, leaving passengers feeling unsafe.

The lack of proper surveillance, overcrowding, and inadequate security personnel have made passengers easy targets for criminals. It is crucial for both the State Transport administration and the police to take immediate action to ensure the safety of passengers at Pune’s bus depots.
