Residents of Nancy Garden Co-op Housing Society in Borade Nagar, Wanwadi, and surrounding areas have been raising concerns about foul odors, pollution, and improper waste disposal since February 27, 2025. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) took action by conducting inspections on February 28, 2025, and uncovered serious violations at Pune Cantonment Board Slaughterhouse and PMC’s Slaughterhouse on Salunkhe Vihar Road, Kondhwa.
Key findings at Pune Cantonment Board Slaughterhouse include operating without a valid Consent to Operate, poor maintenance of the Effluent Treatment Plant leading to sludge accumulation, and lack of proper ventilation and deodorization systems causing odor nuisance. Similarly, violations at PMC’s Slaughterhouse on Salunkhe Vihar Road include the discharge of untreated effluent into Bhairoba Nalla, overflow of contaminated effluent causing drainage blockages, and the absence of deodorization measures to control odor pollution.
In response to these violations, MPCB has issued directives to both slaughterhouses to address the issues immediately, including proper waste management, prevention of accidental discharges, and obtaining a valid Consent to Operate. Failure to comply within three days may result in legal action, including immediate closure of operations. MPCB Regional Officer J.S. Salunkhe has forwarded the notice to senior officials for further action. Residents hope that these measures will lead to a cleaner and healthier environment in their neighborhoods.
