Pune Pulse was the first to bring attention to the issues faced by residents in the area, and now the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has taken action. Following numerous complaints from residents in Borade Nagar and Wanwadi about foul odors and pollution, MPCB officials conducted inspections and found some serious violations.
At the Pune Cantonment Board slaughterhouse, it was discovered that they were operating without a valid Consent to Operate. The Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) was poorly maintained, leading to sludge accumulation, and there was a lack of proper ventilation and deodorization systems causing odor issues.
Similarly, violations were found at the PMC’s slaughterhouse on Salunkhe Vihar Road in Kondhwa, including the discharge of untreated effluent into Bhairoba Nalla, leading to drainage blockages and waste spillage onto the road. There were also no deodorization measures in place to address the odor pollution.
MPCB has issued directives to both slaughterhouses to address the issues, including collecting and treating spilled liquid waste, ensuring solid waste is not stored for more than 24 hours, and preventing the mixing of slaughterhouse waste with municipal solid waste. They have also been instructed to implement precautions to prevent accidental discharges and obtain a valid Consent to Operate.
Failure to comply with these directives will result in legal action, including immediate closure of the slaughterhouses. MPCB has given them three days to respond and explain why their operations should not be shut down. The notice has been forwarded to senior officials for further action. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
