Pune’s public transport system is set to become safer for passengers, especially women, as PMPML plans to install panic buttons in all buses by May 2025. The project, which was first proposed in 2018, faced delays but has been revived with a new deadline set for May.

Recent incidents, such as the Swargate bus depot rape case, have highlighted the need for enhanced safety measures on public transport. Residents have been calling for the installation of panic buttons and CCTV cameras, which were initially promised by February.

Alongside improving safety, PMPML is also focusing on expanding its fleet of buses. Plans are in place to introduce 1,600 to 1,700 new buses, while older buses that have reached the end of their operational lifespan will be scrapped. This expansion aims to prevent service disruptions and ensure smooth operations for the 12 lakh daily passengers who rely on PMPML for their daily commute.
