The Pune Railway Division is setting a shining example in sustainable development by harnessing solar energy at 42 locations. Thanks to the leadership of Divisional Railway Manager Rajesh Verma and Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer Parag Aknurwar, the division has made remarkable progress in integrating renewable energy sources into its operations.

The solar energy initiative kicked off in 2016 with the installation of a 160 KWp Solar PV Roof Top Power Plant at the PRS building in Pune. Since then, the division has expanded its solar installations, reaching a total capacity of 2.74 MW across various stations including Pune, Daund, Satara, Kolhapur, Shivajinagar, Khadki, and Pimpri. Additionally, key sites like the Diesel Loco Shed and DRM Office Building have also been equipped with solar panels.

To further enhance their sustainability efforts, Solar Standalone Street Lights have been strategically placed at remote locations, maximizing the use of renewable energy sources and expanding the division’s green energy footprint. The outcomes of this initiative have been impressive, with 1.80 lakh units of solar energy being generated each month and savings of ₹12.0 lakh per month in energy costs. Not to mention, the project has also helped in reducing 3,250 tons of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to planting 1.08 lakh teak trees.

Overall, the Pune Division’s commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation is commendable, making a significant impact towards creating a cleaner and greener environment for all.
