Great news for students in Pune as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is all set to reopen the planetarium at the e-learning school in Sahakar Nagar after four years of being non-operational.
Originally established with an investment of ₹2 crore, the planetarium was shut down due to a lack of maintenance. However, the Standing Committee has now approved a proposal to appoint an organization to restart and maintain the facility, with an expenditure of ₹61.65 lakh over the next five years.
Efforts toward the revival have been hastened due to increased demands since the COVID-19 pandemic. The original company responsible for developing the planetarium will now inspect and update the equipment, software, and hardware, and design new programs. A total of 27 new programs in Marathi, Hindi, and English are set to be created for an interactive learning experience.
The budget allocation for the first year of operation is ₹33 lakh, with an additional ₹6.96 lakh per year for maintenance over the next four years. PMC aims to reopen the planetarium during the upcoming summer vacation, providing students with a unique educational experience.
Senior officials from the municipal corporation have confirmed the plans for the planetarium’s revival, bringing back the wonders of space exploration to students in Pune.
