Are you feeling the heat this summer in Pune? Well, the lack of rainfall is not just affecting your day-to-day life, but also the water supply in the city.

The Khadakwasla chain of dams, which provides water to Pune, is running low on storage. With only 3.58 TMC of water left in the system, the city’s daily requirement of 0.05 TMC (or 1,470 MLD) is becoming a challenge to meet.

To make matters worse, the upcoming Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram Palkhi processions are set to pass through Pune at the end of the month. This will require an additional half TMC of water to be released into the canal, putting further pressure on the already strained water supply.

The Pune Municipal Corporation is considering implementing water cuts to conserve the remaining resources. However, they are waiting to see how the situation unfolds once the palkhi processions begin.

In the meantime, the State Water Resources Department has urged the civic body to use water judiciously and efficiently. The PMC has already started fixing water leakages at various supply centers, but some areas of the city are still experiencing unequal and insufficient water supply with low pressure.

As we head into the last few days of the month, let’s hope for some much-needed rainfall to replenish the Khadakwasla reservoirs and ease the water crisis in Pune. Stay tuned for updates on this developing situation.
