Daund, 6th March 2025: The picturesque region of Rahu and its surrounding islands in Daund taluka, known for its agricultural richness, is facing a worrying trend of landowners selling off their ancestral lands. Situated at the meeting point of the Mula-Mutha and Bhima rivers, this fertile area has thrived due to abundant water supply, fertile black soil, and its proximity to Pune’s bustling market. However, a large portion of land is now changing hands, sparking concerns about the future of local agriculture and land ownership.
In various villages across Rahu Island, an alarming 40% to 50% of land has already been acquired by outsiders. Once wealthy landowners are now being forced to work as laborers or sharecroppers on the very land they once owned. Many farmers have been tempted by the escalating land prices and have sold their properties without considering the long-term repercussions, leaving their descendants landless.
The surge in land prices is largely due to Rahu’s proximity to urban centers like Pune and Wagholi. The practice of Gunthewari has seen a significant increase, with many young farmers venturing into the real estate sector. However, due to intricate legal procedures, deceitful partnerships, and a lack of market knowledge, several have faced significant financial losses, compelling them to sell off their remaining land to clear debts.
Politics has also played a crucial role in this trend. Rahu Island has traditionally been a political battleground, where participating in elections was a matter of pride. However, with the changing political landscape, financial investments have become essential. Many local leaders, driven by their desire for power and status, have had to sell their lands to sustain their political aspirations.
The region’s rapid infrastructural development has further fueled speculation-driven land sales. The Wagholi-Rahu Road is being transformed into a four-lane concrete road, linking important highways like the Daund-Kedgaon-Solapur route. Moreover, a bridge connecting Takali Bhima in Shirur and Daund talukas is under construction, promising improved connectivity between the Ahilyanagar Highway and Pune-Solapur Highway. With such progress, land prices in Rahu Island are expected to skyrocket in the near future.
Despite the promising prospects, many farmers are selling their lands prematurely. Experts caution that those selling their properties now may regret their decisions as land in this region is poised to become highly valuable. This situation highlights the need for farmers to be educated on long-term planning, sustainable financial management, and the importance of preserving ancestral wealth for future generations.
