Hey there, folks! If you’re a fan of onions, you’re in for a treat this season in Purandar taluka. The farmers there are having a profitable time as onion prices remain high. The Purandar Agriculture Department recently reported that onion cultivation for the Rabi season of 2024-25 surpassed expectations, with 7,018.2 hectares planted—107.41% of the average 6,534.1 hectares.
The early-harvested onions have already been sold, and now farmers are busy harvesting the main crop, known as “Garva” onions. These onions are fetching an average market price of ₹10 to ₹30 per kg, which is a significant improvement compared to previous years. This price surge has brought relief and satisfaction to farmers, who are looking forward to substantial profits this season.
Villages like Veer, Parinche, Mahur, Pisurve, Naygaon, Rajuri, and others in Purandar have reported robust yields. However, the recent cloudy weather had farmers rushing to secure their crops to prevent any potential damage.
To meet the high demand, onions from Purandar are being packed in red mesh bags and jute sacks and transported to markets in Pune, Mumbai, Kolhapur, as well as cities in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka like Madurai, Mysore, and Tiruchirapalli. Farmers have noted that Bengaluru, Kolhapur, and Madurai are offering better prices than Pune and Mumbai.
As of Wednesday (5th March), market prices for onions were as follows:
– Pune: Arrival – 15,958 bags | Price – ₹14-₹26 per kg
– Kolhapur: Arrival – 13,115 bags | Price – ₹10-₹27 per kg
– Mumbai: Arrival – 9,486 bags | Price – ₹10-₹18 per kg
So, if you’re in the market for some onions, it might be a good time to stock up in Purandar!
