Residents in the Wakad-Tathawade area have raised concerns about the deteriorating air quality in their neighborhood. They have noticed an increase in respiratory ailments such as asthma and allergies, especially among vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and pregnant women. The main culprits identified are the excessive dust from construction activities and emissions from vehicles.
Despite numerous complaints to various authorities like the PCMC, MPCB, PMRDA, and local representatives, residents feel that not enough action has been taken to address the pollution issue. They are demanding immediate measures to curb the cement-mixed dust pollution, stricter pollution control measures, regular air quality monitoring, and public reporting.
Residents are also calling for daily road cleaning to reduce dust accumulation, enforcement of pollution norms for vehicles, water spraying on roads to suppress airborne dust, health impact assessments, and provision of medical support. They are emphasizing the importance of maintaining and watering roadside trees to improve air quality.
Protesters have issued a warning to authorities, stating that if their demands are not met, they will escalate their movement. The Wakad-Tathawade Housing Societies Forum has reiterated its commitment to fighting for a pollution-free environment, stating that clean air is their right and they will continue their struggle until it is ensured.
