Shivajinagar was buzzing with activity on International Women’s Day as members of the Vegan India Movement took to the streets to shed light on the exploitation of female animals in the meat, dairy, and egg industries. The protesters held up signs with powerful messages, calling for an end to the forced breeding, artificial insemination, and maternal separation that animals endure.

Organizer Saee pointed out that terms like “artificial insemination” mask the reality of sexual violence against animals, emphasizing the need for consent in all forms of interaction. Another activist drew parallels between human and animal oppression, stressing the systemic violence that female animals face in these industries.

Visual installations depicting the separation of mother cows and their calves drove home the emotional trauma inflicted on animals. Poets recited verses about the suffering of dairy cows, egg-laying hens, and other female animals caught in the cycle of abuse. The activists urged consumers to boycott products that contribute to this exploitation and provided information on transitioning to plant-based alternatives.

Despite initial skepticism, some passersby engaged in conversations about the ethics of their food choices. Activists emphasized that every meal is a choice between cruelty and kindness, urging people to consider the impact of their decisions on all beings. The protest was just the beginning of the Vegan India Movement’s efforts to raise awareness and push for change in the treatment of animals in agriculture.

As activist Manakant stated, the fight for justice extends to all sentient beings, and the organization will continue to speak out against the injustices faced by animals. The message was clear: compassion should not stop at human beings, but should be extended to all living creatures.
