Hey there, folks! If you’ve been caught in a sudden downpour recently, you’re not alone. Cloudburst-like rains have been wreaking havoc across the country, and Pune is no exception. So, what’s causing all this chaos?

Well, according to experts like Dr. Medha Khole, the heavy rains are a result of a combination of factors such as weak monsoon rains, local environmental conditions, and climate change. The rapid urbanization and construction of high-rise buildings in big cities are also contributing to the problem, as they lead to increased warming.

Dr. Anupam Kashyapi, a retired scientist from the India Meteorological Department, added that global climate change, deforestation, urbanization, dense populations, and pollution are all playing a role in the increase of cloudburst-like rain events. These events, which cover a radius of four to five kilometers, have become more frequent due to the irregularity of monsoon rains.

But when exactly can we expect these torrential rains to hit? Well, they tend to occur during the pre-monsoon season from March to May, in September and October after the monsoon begins to retreat, and during the arrival and immediate cessation of monsoon rains.

So, what causes these sudden bursts of rain? It’s all about the convective action of the local atmosphere, influenced by geographical structure and the sun’s heat. This leads to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds, which are considered cloudbursts if they produce more than 100 mm of rain within one hour.

In conclusion, changes in rainfall patterns are a common occurrence in the Indian subcontinent, and only after continuous observation over several decades can we confirm a change in monsoon rainfall patterns. So, stay safe out there, and don’t forget your umbrella!
