Hey Pune folks, have you heard about the nearly 100 mortuary ambulances lying unused in our city? Yep, you read that right! These brand new vehicles, bought by the state health department for crores of rupees, have been sitting idle for the past three months. They were supposed to be distributed in January 2025, but here we are in March, and they’re still parked near Dr. Naidu Hospital, collecting dust.

Apparently, these state-of-the-art ambulances were purchased under the watch of former Health Minister Tanaji Sawant, costing a whopping ₹35 crore. But despite the hefty price tag, they’re just sitting there, with some even having flat tires and dead batteries. Not a great sight, right?

The delay in distributing these ambulances is causing quite a stir, especially in rural areas where access to mortuary ambulances is already limited. Families in these areas often struggle to transport their deceased loved ones due to the lack of government ambulances, forcing them to shell out money for private services. It’s a tough situation, and the unused ambulances are only adding fuel to the fire.

Officials say the distribution was supposed to be done within 100 days of their arrival, but a shortage of drivers is to blame for the delay. However, they assure us that a decision on driver recruitment is on the cards, so hopefully, these ambulances will be put to good use soon. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope for a speedy resolution to this issue.
