Following the recent security concerns at the Swargate bus stand, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has made the decision to scrap all outdated and non-operational buses by April 15. This move comes after the identification of 72 Shivshahi and Shivneri buses that have been unused for over a year, taking up valuable space and even experiencing incidents of theft.
With the scrapping of these old buses, MSRTC’s Pune division aims to make room for new additions to its fleet, including 30 eco-friendly “Shivai” buses. This will also help in clearing space for expanding electric bus charging stations, which have been facing capacity constraints near Shankar Sheth Road.
The auction process for these old buses will be conducted through the official MSRTC website. Bidders will have the opportunity to bid on individual components or the entire bus unit. The highest bidder will be responsible for scrapping the buses within a specified timeframe.
In the past, MSRTC has successfully scrapped 240 old buses across 14 depots in 2024, generating revenue of ₹8.5 crore. The tender process for the 72 buses in Pune has been completed, with the auction scheduled for March 21.
This decision to scrap old buses not only addresses security concerns but also paves the way for a more efficient and environmentally friendly public transportation system in the state. Stay tuned for updates on the auction results and the implementation of the new fleet in Pune.
