Hey there, folks! Big news coming out of Maharashtra today as the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department has mandated that all state and central government-run hostels in the state reserve 5% of their seats for students with disabilities. That’s right, nearly 2,500 differently-abled students are set to benefit from this new policy, which has been a long time coming.

In a government resolution issued on March 10, it was revealed that this policy will apply to a total of 443 government hostels in Maharashtra, catering to both boys and girls. With a combined intake capacity of over 43,000 students, this move is definitely a step in the right direction towards inclusivity and accessibility.

The hostel admissions process will follow specific government guidelines, which are currently under review to make them more streamlined and standardized. And let’s not forget, this reservation for students with disabilities is not an additional quota but falls under the social reservation category.

So, come the academic year 2025-26, students with disabilities can expect to have a fair shot at securing hostel accommodations in government hostels across Maharashtra. Kudos to the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department for making this happen!
