Hey there, folks! Here’s the latest scoop from Dhayari – a massive fire broke out at Pune Municipal Corporation’s dry waste processing project, leaving the facility in ruins. The fire, which started in the wee hours of Friday morning, has thrown a wrench in the handling of nearly 50 tonnes of dry waste, pushing PMC to come up with alternative solutions.
The facility, nestled near the Pari Company in Dhayari, was designed to tackle rejected dry waste that couldn’t be dealt with elsewhere in the city. Waste from different areas is brought here to be shredded into smaller bits. But at around 2:30 AM, disaster struck as a fire erupted, rapidly spreading and sending thick smoke billowing into the air.
Station Officer Prabhakar Umbratkar from the Fire Department revealed, “The fire was a beast, and we had a tough time navigating our water tankers through the chaos. It took a fleet of five fire engines and 14 tankers over an hour and a half to finally put out the flames.”
A sheet shed on the premises housed 12 workers and their families, who were fast asleep when the fire broke out. Luckily, one alert worker managed to wake everyone up in the nick of time. They all evacuated before the fire could consume the area, but their personal belongings like clothes and utensils were lost to the inferno. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
PMC officials have assured the public that even though the dry waste project has been reduced to ashes, waste collection and processing will continue without any hiccups. Sandeep Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of PMC’s Solid Waste Management Department, stated, “The 50-tonne capacity dry waste project at Dhayari has been wiped out by the fire. But fear not, the waste will be redirected to another facility to keep things running smoothly.”
While investigators are on the case to determine the cause of the fire, efforts are already in motion to get waste management operations back on track. Stay tuned for more updates on this fiery situation!
