Yerawada, 15th March 2025: Shocking revelations have emerged from the Regional Mental Hospital in Yerawada, Pune, as a State Health Department inquiry committee uncovered financial irregularities amounting to a staggering ₹1.25 crore. The hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr. Sunil Patil, and other officials have been accused of misusing government funds and inflating payments, leading to a serious breach of trust.

The investigation was led by a five-member inquiry team, with Assistant Director Dr. Prashant Wadikar at the helm. The committee’s report, submitted to Deputy Director of Health Services Dr. Radhakishan Pawar, pointed fingers at Dr. Patil for financial discrepancies dating back to 2017. The committee has recommended recovering the misappropriated amount from all involved officials, including administrative officers, office superintendents, and clerks.

Some of the major allegations outlined in the inquiry report include irregularities in sanitation contracts, fraud related to a solar water heating system, mismanagement of a rehabilitation center resulting in the deaths of 18 patients, procurement irregularities, misuse of de-addiction center funds, and poor patient care practices such as providing diluted milk and mismanaging clothing purchases.

Dr. Pawar has assured that disciplinary action will be taken against junior employees involved in the financial irregularities, while recommendations for action against higher officials will be forwarded to the state health ministry. This scandal has raised serious concerns about the management and operations of the Regional Mental Hospital in Yerawada, prompting calls for transparency and accountability in the healthcare sector.
