The Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) have stirred up controversy by demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad). They argue that the tomb symbolizes slavery, atrocities, and the oppression of Hindus. Threatening mass protests, the organizations have announced a statewide movement across Maharashtra.
VHP Provincial Minister Kishor Chavan emphasized that Aurangzeb’s actions, including killing his own brothers, imprisoning his father, destroying temples, and torturing Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, highlight his cruelty. Keeping his tomb intact, according to Chavan, glorifies his atrocities and must be removed immediately.
If the Maharashtra government fails to take action, Chavan warned that the Hindu community will protest, organize marches, and potentially remove the tomb themselves. Bajrang Dal Provincial Convenor Nitin Mahajan also expressed concerns about Aurangzeb’s ideology influencing extremist elements and the ongoing attempts to impose Sharia law in India.
A protest is scheduled in Pune on Monday, March 17, 2025, outside the district collector’s office. The organizations plan to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister demanding the tomb’s removal. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
