Hey Pune peeps, did you hear about the latest tech initiative by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)? They’re using robots to inspect old water channels in the city! Taking a cue from the Sangli-Kupwad Municipal Corporation, PMC has kicked off a pilot project to see if robots can help assess the condition of pipelines.

Nandkishore Jagtap, head of PMC’s water supply department, spilled the beans saying they’re using robotic technology to internally inspect water pipelines. They’re getting real-time images and videos of the pipelines to check for any issues. Right now, they’re testing it out at two locations, and based on the results, they’ll decide whether to buy the robot or rent it.

It turns out that Pune has a bunch of old water channels in the central areas, but the city doesn’t have much info on their condition. These old pipelines often leak, causing water loss and contamination. And the worst part? Finding these issues used to mean digging up roads, causing traffic chaos. But not anymore!

The robot they’re using is loaded with fancy cameras that show what’s going on inside the pipeline in real-time. This helps them spot leaks, damages, and even unauthorized connections without digging up the roads. They’re focusing on pipelines with a diameter of 100 millimeters or more, trying to prevent water contamination from corroded or burst pipes.

Some of these pipelines are older than 40 years, so it’s no surprise they’re prone to leaks and bursts. Even after multiple repairs, the leaks just won’t quit. So, inspired by Sangli-Kupwad Municipal Corporation’s success, PMC decided to give robotic inspections a shot in Pune.

Right now, the robotic inspections are happening in Kasba Peth and Vadgaon. They’re drilling a small hole in the pipeline to send the robot in, where it can travel up to 180 meters in each direction, taking high-res images and videos with its swanky rotating camera and built-in lighting.

And guess what? The results from the pilot project are looking good! PMC plans to roll out more robotic inspections city-wide, saving us from road dig-ups and making pipeline repairs faster and more efficient. Cheers to tech making our lives easier! 🤖🚰 #PuneTech #RoboInspectors #WaterChannelsInCheck
