Justice Abhay Oka, a Supreme Court Justice, recently addressed the issue of pending cases in the legal system. In a speech at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Yerwada Criminal Court building, he highlighted the need for lawyers to cooperate in resolving cases that have been pending for decades.

With a goal of resolving cases that have been stagnant for 25 to 30 years within the next two years, Justice Oka stressed the importance of proper implementation of the Supreme Court’s action plan. He pointed out that Pune, as the largest judicial district in the country, has a significant backlog of cases that need to be addressed.

During the ceremony, Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol, along with other key judicial officials, emphasized the importance of decentralization of courts and the improvement of infrastructure to handle the large number of pending cases. This sentiment was echoed by Supreme Court Justice Prasanna Varale, who highlighted the importance of upholding constitutional principles in daily life.

The new Yerwada Criminal Court building is expected to alleviate overcrowding at the Shivajinagar Court, with plans for 28 courts to be housed in the new facility. Additionally, two new court buildings are under construction in Shivajinagar to further address the backlog of cases.

The event, which was attended by a large gathering of judicial officers and lawyers, underscored the importance of cooperation among legal professionals in resolving pending cases and improving the efficiency of the judicial system.
