The city of Pune witnessed a surprising turn of events during a recent protest organized by the Patit Pavan Sanghathana. Activists mistakenly targeted a different Mughal ruler, Bahadur Shah Zafar, instead of Aurangzeb, by garlanding his photo with shoes and setting it on fire. The incident, captured in photos and videos that have since gone viral on social media, has drawn criticism for the lack of historical knowledge and poor planning displayed by the demonstrators.

The protest, which took place at Lal Mahal Chowk, was intended to condemn efforts to glorify Aurangzeb, known for his oppressive rule. However, the activists’ error in targeting Bahadur Shah Zafar instead has sparked controversy and ridicule from angry netizens.

The incident comes at a time when calls to remove Aurangzeb’s tomb in Aurangabad, now known as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, have been growing louder. Right-wing organizations and BJP leaders, including Udayanraje Bhosale, have voiced support for the removal of the tomb, citing Aurangzeb’s brutal reign.

The controversy further escalated when MLA Abu Azmi made remarks praising Aurangzeb, sparking strong reactions from various groups. Hindutva organizations argue that Aurangzeb was a tyrant who persecuted Hindus and should not be glorified in any way. This ongoing debate has raised concerns about potential unrest in the region.
