As the summer heat intensifies, so does the demand for lemons in Pune. However, consumers are feeling the pinch as prices soar to ₹10 to ₹15 per lemon in the markets. With lemon water being a popular choice to beat the heat, the rising prices are making it a costly affair for households and street vendors alike.
Officials from the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) have attributed the price hike to reduced supply this year. The arrival of lemons in the wholesale market has dropped, leading to the increase in retail prices. Despite the high costs, vendors are trying to keep customers satisfied by selling lemons in bulk or pairing them with other vegetables.
Even street vendors selling lemon-based drinks are feeling the pressure of rising costs. Some have had to increase prices just to break even, causing some customers to hesitate before making a purchase.
While fluctuations in lemon prices are common during summer, this year’s spike is causing concern among consumers and traders. If production remains low and demand continues to rise, prices could escalate further. In the meantime, Pune residents may have to shell out a little extra to enjoy their favorite summer refreshment.
