Pune is currently experiencing significant temperature fluctuations, with hot daytime conditions contrasting against cooler nights. Meteorologists link this sharp contrast to clear skies, which lead to rapid heating during the day and quick cooling at night. The absence of cloud cover allows solar radiation to heat the surface intensely, while at night, the heat dissipates quickly into the atmosphere.
Weather data reveals steep variations in temperature across different parts of the city. Shivajinagar recorded a high of 38.7°C during the day, with temperatures plunging to 16.7°C at night, creating a 22-degree difference. Similar trends were noted in NDA (38.6°C to 15.8°C) and Pashan (38.8°C to 17.4°C). In Lohgaon, the maximum temperature soared to 40.3°C (4°C above normal) before dropping to 21.2°C, reflecting a 19.1-degree variation.
Experts warn that such drastic temperature swings pose a risk to public health, as the body struggles to adapt. Viral infections, allergic bronchitis, coughs, and colds are becoming increasingly common. Many individuals are also reporting body pain, headaches, fatigue, and even nosebleeds due to the fluctuating temperatures. A family physician explained that sudden shifts weaken the immune system, making people more susceptible to infections.
The impact of day-night temperature variation is particularly severe on the respiratory system. During the day, hot air dries out the mucous membranes, making them more vulnerable. At night, the cooler air provides ideal conditions for viruses to spread and attack the weakened system.
The temperature fluctuations in Pune are part of a larger trend seen across Maharashtra. Brahmapuri (Vidarbha) recorded the state’s highest maximum temperature at 41.5°C. Nashik observed the lowest minimum temperature at 15.4°C, showcasing the regional variations in temperature patterns.
IMD Pune scientist SD Sanap confirmed a slight dip in night temperatures over the past day. Compared to last week, night temperatures have dropped by 0.5 to 1 degree, though the change is not very significant. Some relief is expected as moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal may lead to partly cloudy skies on Wednesday and Thursday. While this may bring a slight dip in daytime temperatures, night temperatures could rise due to easterly winds carrying more moisture.
Given these conditions, residents are advised to take preventive measures to avoid heat-related illnesses. Staying hydrated, dressing appropriately, and limiting direct sun exposure can help mitigate health risks. Those vulnerable to temperature shifts, including elderly individuals and children, should take extra precautions. As Pune continues to experience sharp day-night temperature swings, awareness and preparedness remain crucial to maintaining public health and well-being.
