The Bombay High Court has taken action in the case of 30-year-old Vikram Gaikwad, who was found dead on February 8. His family believes he was murdered due to his inter-caste marriage, with allegations of honour killing involved. The court has directed a senior police official in Pune to oversee the investigation, following claims of police probe lapses.

Gaikwad, from a scheduled caste community, had married a woman from the Maratha community. His family stated that the woman’s relatives pressured him to divorce her, but he refused. Reports suggest that Gaikwad had received threats from the woman’s family and was contemplating filing a police complaint before his untimely death.

The family’s plea also mentioned a village meeting held by the woman’s family to pressure Gaikwad into divorce, citing his lower caste status. Despite warnings from the woman to stay alert, Gaikwad was found dead with stab wounds. His body and car were discovered in different locations, both covered in blood.

While the family calls for a CBI or CID investigation for impartiality, the prosecution argues that the murder is linked to a monetary dispute rather than honour killing. The accused have no apparent connection to the woman’s family, and dump data from the area has been collected to support this claim.

Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Dr. Neela Gokhale have directed the Superintendent of Police to supervise the probe and requested a short affidavit within three weeks. The next hearing is scheduled for April 8.
