- Pune authorities are taking steps to tackle the city’s growing traffic congestion by widening major roads in the eastern region. These roads, which pass through Defence land, are set to be expanded with revised proposals to be submitted to the Ministry of Defence.
- A recent meeting was held with the Divisional Commissioner, where officials from the PMC, PWD, Ministry of Defence, police, and Cantonment Board discussed the road-widening project.
- Pune has seen a significant increase in traffic congestion in recent years, leading to the need for wider city roads. Many alternative routes that could ease traffic flow pass through Defence Ministry territory but are currently narrow and do not meet DP and RP standards.
- To address the issue, the PMC and police conducted a survey and proposed the expansion of several roads, including North Main Road, Golibar Maidan to Kondhwa, Lullanagar, Ghorpadi Road to Bhairoba Nala Road, and Bhairoba Nala to Netaji Nagar Road.
- The PMC had previously requested land from the Ministry of Defence for the expansion but no action was taken. A joint meeting was then requested through the Divisional Commissioner’s office to discuss the matter and seek collaboration from all relevant departments.
- During the meeting, the Divisional Commissioner emphasized the need for collaboration and instructed the PMC to submit revised proposals specifying the required land parcels as per the Defence Ministry’s guidelines.
Overall, the road-widening project in Pune’s eastern region aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve the city’s transportation infrastructure for the benefit of residents and commuters.
