If you’ve been stuck in traffic in and around Pune lately, you might be in for some relief soon. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has teamed up with various government agencies to tackle the issue of unauthorized constructions along national and state highways in the area.
In a three-phase operation, over 3,500 unauthorized structures have been demolished, clearing up a whopping 3.47 lakh square feet of encroached land. The collaboration between NHAI, PWD, PMC, and PCMC has been instrumental in this effort.
The first phase, which ran from late January to mid-February, focused on the Pune Nagar Highway and saw the removal of 822 unauthorized constructions. The second phase, which took place in early March, targeted highways like Pune-Nashik and Pune-Solapur, resulting in the demolition of 2,478 structures.
The ongoing third phase, which started on 17th March, is currently focused on areas like Hadapsar and Dive Ghat, as well as the Mumbai Bengaluru Highway. So far, 210 unauthorized structures have been removed, freeing up 34,500 square feet of road space.
This concerted effort is aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion in and around Pune. So, next time you’re stuck in traffic, just remember that these efforts are being made to make your commute a little easier.
