As Zika virus cases continue to rise in Pune, BJ Medical College (BJMC) and Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) are stepping up their efforts to screen and manage potential patients. Here’s a look at the proactive measures being taken:

1. Screening Protocol Initiated: Dr. Eknath Pawar, the dean of BJMC, held a meeting with department heads, doctors, and clinicians to kickstart a screening protocol for fever patients and suspected Zika virus cases.

2. Immediate Actions: Following recommendations from ICMR and NVBDCP, BJMC and SGH will start screening all fever patients for Zika virus infection. Suspected cases will be tested daily at the National Institute of Virology (NIV).

3. Reserved Beds: The hospital has allocated 20 beds for Zika virus cases, with 10 beds each in the medicine and obstetrics and gynecology departments.

4. Screening and Monitoring: All fever patients at SGH will be tested for Zika virus, especially those with similar symptoms or negative results for other illnesses like dengue and chikungunya.

5. Focus on Pregnant Women: Pregnant women receiving ANC at SGH will undergo rigorous screening, including ultrasound tests, to detect any abnormalities that may require Zika virus testing.

6. Preventive Measures: In addition to patient care, the hospital is taking steps to prevent mosquito breeding on its premises by spraying insecticides, fogging, and clearing water-logged areas.

By implementing these measures, BJMC and SGH hope to control the spread of Zika virus and ensure the safety of their patients, especially pregnant women and other vulnerable populations.
