Sassoon General Hospital in Pune is making strides in expanding its healthcare services with the establishment of a dedicated government cancer hospital on its premises. The project is in its final stages, with plans to secure necessary space in front of the hospital. Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif announced the progress during the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly’s monsoon session.

During the session, concerns were raised about Sassoon General Hospital by MLA Bhimrao Tapkir, prompting reassurances from Mushrif. He mentioned that bariatric surgery specialists are now available at the hospital, ensuring proper care for newborns. Plans are also in place to increase the capacity of the intensive care unit. An upcoming hospital inspection will involve discussions with Pune City’s elected representatives to evaluate current facilities and potential improvements.

Mushrif highlighted the efforts to fill vacancies at medical colleges and hospitals through the Maharashtra Public Service Commission. Group ‘C’ vacancies have already been addressed, and District Collectors have been given the authority to handle Group ‘D’ vacancies on a contractual basis. Principals now have the power to procure medicines at medical college hospitals, ensuring timely procurement in urgent situations.

In terms of healthcare services, Sassoon Hospital is working on arrangements for dialysis and aims to introduce liver transplant treatments, similar to those available in Mumbai, at government hospitals in Pune. These developments are set to enhance the hospital’s reputation for providing high-quality healthcare services in the region.
