Hey Pune folks, here’s a quick update on the Zika virus situation in our city. The PMC Health Department recently reported that two pregnant women from Pashan and a 15-year-old boy from Bhusari Colony have been diagnosed with Zika, bringing the total number of cases in Pune to fifteen. Don’t worry though, all patients are currently stable and receiving treatment at home.

The affected areas include Erandwane, Mundhwa, Dahanukar Colony, Pashan, Ambegaon Budruk, Kharadi, and Kalas, with eight of the patients being pregnant women. This has definitely added some challenges for the health department.

Symptoms of Zika include fever, rash, headache, joint pain, redness of the eyes, and muscle pain. The virus is primarily spread through mosquito bites but can also be transmitted through sexual intercourse or during pregnancy.

To prevent the spread of Zika, make sure to prevent mosquito breeding, wear long-sleeved clothes, and eliminate standing water around your home. Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment for Zika, but patients are advised to rest, drink plenty of water, and eat healthily.

Dr. Kalpana Baliwant from PMC’s Health Department stressed the importance of survey efforts to tackle the rising Zika cases. Pregnant women in affected areas are a top priority for screening, and blood samples are being sent to the National Institute of Virology for testing. Stay safe and take care, Pune!
