The iconic Sadhu Vaswani Bridge in Koregaon Park is getting a major makeover as the Pune Municipal Corporation has begun the demolition process. The 50-year-old bridge, which has been a key structure in the Queen’s Garden area, is being torn down to make way for a new bridge that will help ease traffic congestion in the area.
The decision to demolish the bridge came after concerns were raised about its safety due to the heavy vehicles that regularly used it. A technical audit conducted in 2018 confirmed that the bridge was no longer safe for use, leading to discussions on whether to repair or replace it. Eventually, a plan was put in place to demolish and rebuild the bridge, with the railway administration granting the necessary permissions for the project.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Minister Chandrakant Patil laid the foundation stone for the new bridge, signaling the official start of the project. The demolition work began after a successful trial of traffic re-routing in the area to minimize disruptions. The project is estimated to cost ₹83 crores, with a significant portion of the municipal budget allocated for its completion.
The new bridge is expected to improve traffic flow and safety in Koregaon Park, addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges in the area. The demolition of the Sadhu Vaswani Bridge marks a significant step towards modernizing Pune’s infrastructure and ensuring better transportation for its residents.
