Pune, July 11, 2024: A major liquor smuggling operation was recently busted by the Pune State Excise Department, with liquor worth over Rs 1 crore 28 lakh seized. The operation took place on the Pune-Satara Road in the Khed Shivapur area, where a truck carrying the illegal liquor was intercepted.

The Pune State Excise Department arrested Sunil Chakraborty in connection with the incident. It is reported that liquor from Goa is frequently smuggled into Maharashtra due to the lower tax rates in Goa, making it cheaper compared to other states. The department had received information about the smuggling operation and acted swiftly to apprehend the culprits.

“A confidential source tipped off our officials about a truck smuggling liquor in the Khed Shivapur area. Our team set up a trap and successfully intercepted the truck. While the front of the truck contained boxes of cosmetics, the back was loaded with liquor smuggled from Goa,” said Pune Excise Superintendent Charan Singh Rajput.

A total of two thousand boxes of Goa liquor were seized, with the alcohol stock valued at Rs 1.2 crore. The truck used for smuggling was also confiscated as part of the operation. The Pune State Excise Department has been cracking down on illegal liquor sales in the region and is conducting regular patrols to prevent smuggling activities.

This recent bust highlights the ongoing issue of liquor smuggling from Goa into Maharashtra and the efforts being made by authorities to curb such illegal activities.
