Pune Traffic Police Crack Down on Violators with Nakabandi Operations

In an effort to reduce accidents during the night, the Pune Traffic Police conducted nakabandi operations at various chowks across the city for 45 days. From May 21 to July 8, a total of 1,58,269 actions were taken against violators, resulting in penalties amounting to over Rs 12.21 crore being collected.

During the first week of July 2024 alone, 1,232 drunk drivers were caught, along with 4,522 individuals penalized for various offences such as drunk driving, rash driving, missing number plates, triple seating, and driving on the wrong side of the road.

The crackdown on drunk driving comes in the wake of a hit-and-run incident in Kalyani Nagar, prompting the Traffic Police to set up checkpoints at 20 locations across the city. Thousands of drivers have already been penalized for their violations.

In just 24 hours on July 7-8, penalties amounting to nearly Rs 50 lakh were recovered from 7,549 individuals for Motor Vehicles Act violations. From January to June 2024, a total of 1,684 people were penalized for similar offences.

Despite the ongoing efforts by the Pune Police, the number of drunk driving violations remains high. To address this, the police are planning to implement even stricter measures, including a three-month license suspension for first-time offenders and permanent cancellation for repeat offenders. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) will assist in enforcing these measures, according to DCP (Traffic) Rohidas Pawar.
