Nashik: Pune district is making headlines in the world of health science education, boasting the highest number of colleges affiliated with Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS). A recent report from MUHS’s ‘Statistical Yearbook-2023’ reveals that Pune leads the pack with a total of 48 health science institutes, followed by Mumbai with 38 and Nashik with 37. However, the report also points out that Gadchiroli is the odd one out, being the only district without any MUHS-affiliated health science colleges.
MUHS Vice-Chancellor Lt Gen Dr. Madhuri Kanitkar (retd) emphasized the importance of the yearbook, stating that it provides valuable information for students, parents, and other stakeholders interested in the academic activities of the university. The comprehensive data in the yearbook covers student enrollment figures, the number of affiliated colleges, exam results, and welfare schemes up to December 31, 2022.
The report highlights that Pune has emerged as an educational hub, attracting students from across Maharashtra and beyond, hence the high number of health science colleges in the district. Out of the 480 MUHS-affiliated colleges, a majority (63%) are concentrated in 10 districts, including Pune, Mumbai, Nashik, and others.
The distribution of colleges across districts also sheds light on the types of institutions, with a majority being private unaided colleges. There is a significant variation in the number of colleges per district, with Washim having only three colleges while Pune boasts 48. The report also delves into the specializations offered by MUHS-affiliated colleges, including nursing, Ayurveda, physiotherapy, allopathy, and dental courses.
Interestingly, the report highlights a gender disparity in student enrollments, with allopathy medical courses having more male students, while courses like nursing, homeopathy, and dental have higher female enrollment. Overall, the ‘Statistical Yearbook-2023’ provides a comprehensive overview of the health science education landscape in Maharashtra, showcasing the diversity and scope of MUHS-affiliated colleges.
