Tragedy struck Sabarkantha district in Gujarat as four children lost their lives to a suspected Chandipura virus infection, with two others currently receiving treatment at Himmat Nagar Civil Hospital. The rare and potentially fatal virus is known to cause fever, flu-like symptoms, and acute encephalitis, spreading through vectors like mosquitoes and sandflies. Blood samples from all six children have been sent to NIV Pune for confirmation, with results pending. District health officials are working to contain the infection by implementing preventive measures, including dusting to eradicate sandflies in affected areas. The authorities in Rajasthan have also been informed about the suspected viral infection-related deaths.
