The dangers of pulmonary embolism (PE) during long-haul flights have been on the rise at Sahyadri Hospitals in Pune. Medical experts are emphasizing the risks of immobility during flights and the importance of preventive measures.

Dr. Kaurabhi Zade, an Interventional Radiologist, explained that extended air travel can lead to blood clot formation due to cramped seating and dehydration. Research has shown that flights over four hours significantly increase the risk of PE, with each additional two hours further elevating the risk.

Various studies have highlighted the effectiveness of preventive measures such as wearing compression stockings during flights. Patients affected by PE at Sahyadri Hospitals have ranged in age, emphasizing the need for immediate medical attention and treatment.

Dr. Kapil Borawake, leader of the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team, recommends taking proactive measures during flights, including regular walks, staying hydrated, and avoiding alcohol. Mechanical thrombectomy has emerged as a crucial intervention for severe cases, improving patient survival rates.

The rise in PE cases among travelers underscores the importance of addressing the risks associated with long-haul flights and implementing preventive measures to ensure passenger safety.
