Hey Pune folks, are you tired of dealing with flooded roads every monsoon season? Well, you’re not alone. Experts and concerned citizens recently came together at the Pune International Centre’s ‘Pune Samwad’ to discuss the city’s recurrent flooding issues and possible solutions.

One of the main culprits identified for the flooding problem is inadequate drainage systems and poor urban planning. Encroachment of nalas and extensive ground concretisation have only exacerbated the situation, leading to increased water runoff and flooding challenges.

Former Principal Secretary, Maharashtra, Mahesh Zagade, emphasized the need to clear and prevent encroachments on nalas, while architect Vivek Kharwadkar called for a dedicated storm-water management department. Sarang Yadwadkar, a member of the Development Plan of Pune City, warned that current flood events may just be a preview of future challenges as Pune is vulnerable to climate change-induced cloudbursts.

The discussion also touched upon the importance of sustainable urban planning practices, such as considering carrying capacities of areas in granting FSI and managing water at upstream levels. Environment consultant Poorva Keskar suggested green roofing, water harvesting, and avoiding concretisation of footpaths and cycle tracks to enhance percolation.

The session ended with a call for active citizen involvement in shaping urban strategies for a better Pune. So, let’s all pitch in and work towards a flood-free city by 2047. Your suggestions and participation can make a difference!
