Heavy rains in the Indrayani River catchment area have wreaked havoc in Alandi, causing the river’s water level to rise significantly and resulting in flooding on both banks. The Bhakti Sopan bridge and the Bhakta Pundalik temple in Alandi have been submerged as a result. The situation is dire as the water level in the Indrayani River continues to increase.

In response to the crisis, authorities took swift action on Thursday, July 25, by closing three bridges in the area: the old bridge near Alandi PMPL bus station, the bridge from Chakan Chowk to Dehu Fata, and the new bridge in the Siddhabet area.

Continuous heavy rains since Wednesday, July 24, have been the main cause of the rising water levels. The situation worsened with increased rainfall in the evening and overnight. The floodwaters are believed to have swept away the iron protection stone on the Bhakti Sopan bridge. Additionally, the release of extra water from the Vadivale Dam, combined with heavy rains in the Lonavala area, has only made matters worse.

In anticipation of further flooding on Thursday morning, the police and municipal administration took proactive measures by closing the old bridge on the Indrayani River, the main bridge at Chakan Chowk, and the bridge in Siddhabet. Barricades were set up to block the roads, and traffic heading to the city and Pune was diverted through the new bridge next to the old one, leading to congestion on this route.

To ensure the safety of citizens and devotees, the Municipal Corporation and police have closed roads leading to the Indrayani Ghat using wooden bamboo and iron sheets. Police officers have been stationed at various points to enforce the closures. Chief Magistrate Kailas Kendra and Senior Police Officer Bhima Narke have issued warnings advising people to steer clear of the flood-affected areas near the Indrayani River.
